Much has already been said about the misrepresentation of what constitutes an 'acceptable' body shape in the media, but more needs to be done to bring out into the open the diversity of body shapes that exist and to raise awareness of how our buttoned-up attitude to the human body is causing us to lead potentially unhealthy lives. The more we can stop thinking about whether ‘I’m too heavy, too skinny, not muscly enough etc.’ the more relaxed we can feel.
Society battles with the contradictory problem of the 'perfect' body that is represented in fashion and popular culture - against the contrasting issue with rising obesity - so by encouraging people of all ages, shapes and sizes to take part in the Great British Skinny Dip we will be highlighting the simple fact that there is no such thing as a perfect body and taking away the fear people feel about exposing their body - whatever its shape and size.
The aim of GBSD is for people to develop a healthy attitude towards their bodies by realising that a healthy body doesn't mean looking like an athlete or a catwalk model. It's all about learning to love your body whatever it looks like, whilst also taking care of it in a responsible way, to make sure it doesn't cause you health problems.
Taking part in one of the many skinny dips organised through GBSD is just one way of taking more steps towards building a more positive view of body image. If you’re still a little bit unsure about whether you have the confidence to attend a skinny dip, there’s still time to build up your nerve! Although ***spoiler alert*** once you skinny dip you’ll very quickly realise that there was never anything to be worried about in the first place!
So, in order to become increasingly more comfortable with public nudity, why not use the below list as inspiration:
- Sleep naked
- Attend a life drawing class
- Next time you are home alone, spend some time doing your everyday chores…naked!
- Got a nice garden/sun room? Go au natural and sunbathe in the nude
- Become a member of British Naturism and attend one of the many year round swims or drop into your local naturist club – you won’t ever be made to strip down until you feel ready to try
Then, when July 2019 rolls around not only will you be completely comfortable about being naked in public, you’ll have nothing to waste time worrying about and everything to lose yourself to and enjoy.
